플랜트 기자재에 사용하는 Thermal Insulation 은 단열 처리를 목적으로 하는 소재를 총칭합니다. 단열을 하는 주목적은 공정에서 발생하는 열의 이동을 차단해서 공정의 Heat loss를 최소화하고 Personal protection 과 소음을 차단하는 부가적인 목적을 위해 사용합니다. 열은 접촉에 의해 발생하는 필연적인 과정의 연속이지만 적합한 단열재를 선정하면 이를 최소화 할 수 있습니다. 따라서 열 전도도를 갖추기 위한 올바른 절연 소재의 선택이 필요하다 할 수 있습니다. 단열을 위한 Insulation 의 재질을 선정하는 기준은 온도와 직접적 연관성을 갖고 있습니다. 크게 Hot 과 Cold insulation 으로 구분하며 각각의 온도 조건에 맞는 올바른 재질의 선정이 필요합니다. 이를 위해서는 ASTM Code의 내용을 바탕으로 재질의 선정 기준을 가늠할 수 있습니다.
1. ASTM C892 - Standard Specification for High-Temperature Fiber Blanket Thermal Insulation
최대온도 3000 °F Blanket thermal insulation 에 대한 Type, Grades, Thickness, Width, Thermal Conductivity 에 대한 내용을 기술하고 있습니다.

2. ASTM C 612 - Standard Specification for Mineral Fiber Block and Board Thermal Insulation
최대 온도 1800 °F 사용온도에 따른 Type 구분과 그에 따른 Thermal conductivity 에 대한 내용을 기술하고 있습니다.
Insulation Material: Mineral Fiber Block
Insulation 적용 온도 범위: 450 °F (232 °C) to 1800 °F (982 °C)
